This week we engaged in discussion over the life and work of two Irish literary greats, William Butler Yeats and James Joyce. We read poems excerpted from Yeat's Easter, 1916 and Other Poems, among them "Easter 1916" and "Sixteen Dead Men." From Joyce's Dubliners, we read and discussed "The Sisters," with "Eveline" and "Two Gallants" also included in the packet. Tomorrow on the plane everyone will read the first chapter from Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes, which will look at the Irish-American immigrant experience stateside, prior to McCourt's family's return to the Emerald Isle.
Transitioning from literature to another aspect of Irish culture, sport, we discussed the traditions of hurling and gaelic football. Click on the links to watch some clips! We may have the privilege of meeting with a gaelic football star from the 1970's, named Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, while we are over in Ireland.
