We awoke this morning in Cobh. While there, we checked out memorials dedicated to the Lusitania and Titanic. The Lusitania was sunk by German U-boats in 1915 off the coast of Old Head and both survivors and the deceased were brought to Cobh. Many survivors stayed in the famous hotel where we stayed, The Commodore! Cobh was the last port-of-call for the Titanic, and so there is also a monument in honor of those lost at sea. Afterwards we visited St. Colman's Cathedral, which took 47 years to build. It was so beautiful, inside and out, and we were all in awe! To wrap up our stay in Cobh, we visited the Heritage Centre, which has excellent exhibits on the aforementioned ships, in addition to telling the story of the nearly 3 million Irish that emigrated out of Cobh during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Our group enjoyed a visit to Dinish Island in Kenmare Bay with the Booth Family. Mr. Booth is the President of the Brooks School Board of Trustees, and when he heard that we were creating our Winter Term, it was he who suggested we make the trip to Ireland. His generosity, and offer to put us up in town, helped to make the trip possible. Also, they have adorable pet donkeys that were a smash hit!
